Filipinos and foreigners have admired the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ifugao Rice Terraces alike for its majestic beauty. Over the years though, urbanization has threatened its very existence. The preservation of these terraces ultimately depends on the people and the culture that would support this agricultural system. The UP Open University has initiated a human resource development program to help local communities sustain this Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS). Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the project has trained local community leaders on nature and culture studies, Satoyama research methods including information technology, ecotourism, and agribusiness. Coordinated by Prof. Inocencio Buot, Jr., the project was implemented in cooperation with Kanazawa University, Ifugao State University, and the Ifugao Provincial Government.
