As reflective practitioners, teachers need to conduct research to have a better understanding of their students’ needs as well as assess the effectiveness of the teaching strategies they employ. In 2010-2011, the UP Open University conducted a blended mentorship project to improve science education by inculcating a research culture among Grade 3 and 4 teachers in selected public schools in Cebu. The project has helped to produce elementary science teachers who are able to use appropriate pedagogies and content, conduct research, and develop research-based teaching materials. This project was headed by Prof. Ricardo Bagarinao and implemented through the support of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc.
