Dr. Sheila R. Bonito, Professor under the UP Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), and Director of the UPOU Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), is ASEA-UNINET’s 2016 Bernd Rode Awardee (Senior Researcher Category).

ASEA-UNINET, or the Austrian-South-East-Asian Academic University Network, is an international network of universities from Europe and Southeast Asia whose goal is to promote the continuous internationalization of education and research. The ASEA-UNINET established the Bernd Rode Award (BRA) to grant outstanding scientific and higher education collaborations between European and Southeast Asian Universities. The award, named after an eminent Austrian researcher and founder of ASEA-UNINET, is given every 18 months with a financial support of 5000 euros for each category – Junior, Senior and Project-Based. The support is given to enhance and extend the research possibilities in the context of projects backed by ASEA-UNINET.

In January 2015, Dr. Bonito was awarded Technology Scholarship Grant for Southeast Asia (TSA Post Doc) of the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy of Austria within the framework of the ASEA-UNINET for her Post-Doctoral Fellowship on Data Mining in Twitter at the Vienna University of Technology (VUT). This scholarship led to her nomination for the BRA which was awarded during the ASEA-UNINET Plenary Meeting from 15-18 February 2016 at the Institute for Peace and Democracy Udayana University in Bali, Indonesia.

Dr. Bonito is an expert in statistics, research, epidemiology, and health education. In addition to her Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the VUT, she also has Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Doctoral Nursing from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Her Doctorate in Public Health (Epidemiology) degree was from the University of the Philippines in Manila. She has several publications in nursing education, multimedia materials in nursing and nursing research in disasters and emergencies. She is a member of the International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing and the International Union of Health Promotion and Education. (Anna Cañas-Llamas)
