Diploma in Language Studies for Teachers

The DLST is a post-baccalaureate program that aims to upgrade and update the knowledge and competencies of language and reading teachers. It is designed for teachers whose undergraduate training was not in English studies (including literature) or reading or language education.

Objectives

The program aims to:
  • Develop more qualified and highly-trained teachers of language and reading at all levels;
  • Enable elementary and high school teachers as well as teacher educators to upgrade their knowledge and competencies in language and reading instruction;
  • Provide continuing education for teachers who do not have the proper background and training but are assigned to teach language and reading;
  • Equip school administrators, school supervisors, and literacy trainors with the knowledge and competencies in organizing, implementing, and evaluating school and community-based language and literacy programs; and
  • Enable curriculum developers and textbook writers to acquire updated knowledge and strategies in the development of language and reading instructional and assessment materials.

Mode of Instruction

All courses are delivered by DE mode.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree (in Education or in other fields)  from a recognized institution. 

Applicants are admitted provisionally until completion of 9 units during the first year with a general weighted average of 2.0 or better.

The Curriculum

The Diploma consists of a total of 24 units of core courses, major electives, and free electives, which can be completed in two years or four semesters.

The Psychology of Reading (3 units)

Theories on the nature of reading processes and its correlates

EDL 201

Applied Linguistics for Communication Arts (3 units)

Language theories, principles and approaches as applied to language analysis with emphasis on grammar structures and phonetics of English/Filipino relative to communicative use

EDFD 221 Socio-Cultural Foundations of Education: A Comparative Approach (3 units)

Major electives (any 9 units from the following)

Literature-Based Reading Programs (3 units)

Using children's literature in reading programs
(Prerequisite: EDR 201 or consent of instructor)

Teaching Reading and Literary Appreciation in a Bilingual Context (3 units)

Techniques and strategies for teaching reading and literary appreciation in a bilingual context

Reading in the Content Areas(3 units)

Techniques and strategies in reading textual materials in the content areas

Technology in Language Education (3 units)

Multi-channel learning and production of instructional materials for communicative and interactive language learning and teaching in the elementary and secondary schools
