UP BOR Institutionalizes Master in Distance Education Program

The University of the Philippines Board of Regents (UP BOR) on its 25 August 2006 meeting approved UPOU’s proposal to offer the Master of Distance Education (MDE) program. The program will be open to enrollees starting 1st semester AY 2007-2008.

The Master of Distance Education is composed of 34 units of courses. It has six core courses (18 units) and four electives (12 units), with at least one elective course from each of the following clusters: Pedagogy, Technology Applications, and Educational Management. The capstone course is a 4-unit project, a Special Problem in Distance Education.

Dean Nemah Hermosa of the Faculty of Education said that the program is designed to produce individuals who can:

  • Use their knowledge of theories, models, and principles of open learning and distance education to critically examine various aspects of DE programs from a variety of perspectives;

  • Lead in designing, developing and delivering distance education programs that are underpinned by effective pedagogy and appropriate and sustainable use of technology;

  • Lead in managing distance education programs in different contexts—educational, business and non-profit organizations—to meet the needs of target learners;

  • Understand and critique the broader policy, regulatory, and social issues that arise from distance education; and

  • Contribute to the body of knowledge regarding open learning and distance education by conducting research and evaluation studies, and through materials, course, and program development.

Graduates of the program are expected to serve as trainors/educators, managers/directors, researchers, curriculum and instructional designers, and policy-makers in the area of open learning and distance education.
