UPOU – COOP Institute Partnership

To help build successful cooperative enterprises in the Philippines, the UP Open University and the Institute for Coop Excellence (COOP Institute) has entered into a partnership to develop and provide quality training and education for personnel of cooperatives.
The COOP Institute—a non-stock, non-profit corporation—believes that the UPOU can help address the competency requirements of cooperatives through the development and offering of capacity building and professionalization programs through distance education.
Through the memorandum of understanding signed during the 13th anniversary of the UPOU, the two institutions will endeavor to pursue the following:
For the UPOU to
- offer existing UPOU enterprise-related non-formal courses such as Personal Entrepreneurial Development, New Enterprise Planning, Introduction to eCommerce, and Human Resource Management-Industrial Relations, and Management in the Philippine Setting to cooperative members, officers, and personnel of the institute;
- develop and publish new courses and materials such as the modules produced by the COOP Institute;
- develop and offer the repackagedmodules;
- develop and deliver the UPOU existing and newly-created ourses into ladderized types of certificate, diploma, or graduate program and
- conduct orientation sessions on open and distance learning that focus on how capacity building of cooperatives can be done.
For its part, the COOP Institute will assume the following roles:
- market the courses directly to the primary coops;
- source funds needed to implement the program; and
- organize information campaigns and seminars to promote interest in distance learning and cooperative entrepreneurship.
To start the implementation of the project, the UPOU, through the Faculty of Management Development Studies, and the COOP Institute will soon conduct a curriculum development workshop. (Luisa A. Gelisan, OC)
