UPOU celebrates UP's 101st Foundation Day

To commemorate the University of the Philippines 101st Foundation Day, the UP Open University hosted various activities in its headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna on 18 June 2009. The celebration started with a Flag Raising Ceremony attended by the officials, faculty, REPS, and staff members of UPOU.

Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso, Chancellor of the UPOU, expressed her gratitude to all personnel of UPOU who wholeheartedly dedicate their knowledge, talent, skills, support, and time for the progress of the university. She hopes that as UP enter its second centenary, they will continue on with the excellent service they are extending to the university and its students.

After the flag ceremony, the UPOU constituents, carried on with the following activities:

1) Tree planting. Thirty-seven seedlings of various species of trees -- Almaciga, Barringtonia, Dao, and Cerbera Manghas -- were planted in the UPOU grounds.

2) A lecture on Disaster Management conducted by Dr. Lourdes Ladrido-Ignacio, a Professor of Psychiatry in UP Manila.

3) Round table discussion on the Master of ASEAN Studies program, which was participated in by the officials and faculty members of UPOU and UP Diliman.

4) Premiere showing of “Pamantasang Hirang”, a musical about UP which was staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and at the University Theater in UP Diliman last year.

5) Presentation of Loyalty Awards to UPOU employees who had served the university for five and 10 years.

6) House warming of the UPOU Executive Guest House, which is located at #6 Narra St., Forestry Campus, UP Los Baños, Laguna. The house warming was attended by UPLB Chancellor, Dr. Luis Rey Velasco and some of his Vice Chancellors. The guest house is a donation from UP Los Baños. (Luisa A. Gelisan, OC)
