In celebration of the International Day of Forests, the Faculty of Management and Development Studies will hold a Tree Planting activity this coming 21 March 2023 at the UP Open University Grounds. The International Day of Forests is an annual observance that aims to give recognition and raise awareness on the importance of all types of forests.

With this year’s International Day of Forests theme as “Forests and Health,” this activity is a great way to support and enhance the local ecosystem. Native trees provide food and shelter for wildlife that depends on them; they also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They are more resistant to pests and diseases than non-native trees, in turn requiring less maintenance and have a better chance of survival. By planting native trees, the goals of preserving biodiversity and beautifying our natural environment are simultaneously achieve

The list of native trees to be planted in the UPOU Grounds are:

  • Katmon (Dillenia philippinensis Rolfe)
  • Arius (Podocarpus costalis C. Presl)
  • Paraiso (Melia azedarach L.)
  • Salinggogon (Cratoxylum formosum (Jack) Dyer)
  • Bagauak-Morado (Clerodendrum quadriloculare (Blanco) Merr.)

These native trees will be planted around the Teaching and Learning Hub and the Main Building areas around UP Open University. The current and former UPOU Officials will grace this event.

You may check more information about these native trees through this link.
