The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) welcomed the new Director of the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), Asst. Prof. Ana Katrina Marcial. Her appointment took effect on 1 October 2018 and will end on 30 April 2019. Prior to this appointment, she also served as Program Development Associate of the same office from 1 February to October 2018. Asst. The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) lost a part of its heart on 15 January 2019 when Prof. Liza Cuevas Carascal breathed her last. The University of the Philippines has climbed 79 places to move into the top 100 universities from emerging markets. It is now 87th among 442 institutions from 43 countries, according to the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings. Its overall score went up to 32.8 from 24.4. The UP Open University (UPOU), with the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK), officially inaugurated the Philippines Learning Commons (PLC) at the Main Campus of NUK in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on 28 November 2018. The PLC is a venue and facility established to help Filipinos and other borderless workers based in Kaohsiung to engage in continuing education and acquire new knowledge and skills. Patricia Calora and Yrelle Lleva, Research Assistants of the the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), were among the finalists for best paper award at the recently held International Conference on Open and Distance eLearning (ICODeL). Leaders in education from the Philippines and Taiwan teamed up for the conduct of the 3rd International Conference on Open and Distance eLearning (ICODeL2018).
