The University of the Philippines (UP) Board of Regents (BOR) has approved the renaming of the  UP Open University (UPOU) Information Office (IO) to Office of Public Affairs (OPA). The approval was made on 21 May 2020 during the 1351st Meeting of the UP BOR.  The UPOU IO was created on 29 July 2010 primarily for information materials production, services and coordination. Over the years the function of the office has evolved to accommodate more functions connected to relations with the general public. The Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), UP Open University (UPOU) conducted its first Zoom MeetUPs on 28 May 2020. FICS MeetUPs is a quarterly activity of FICS administrative staff and Research Assistants. A free Executive Course on Remote Teaching and Learning will be offered by the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). Registration will start on 18 May 2020 and the course will run from 25 May to 29 May 2020.  The course is composed of three modules. The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Master of Public Management (MPM) program developed a free online course specifically for  public servants to hone skills and improve knowledge on how LGUs can work together in achieving common goals. UPOU students take on volunteer work during COVID-19 crisis

Amidst the threat of COVID-19, 12  University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) students continued to heed the call of volunteerism across the country.
