Dr. Ria Mae Borromeo, Assistant Professor of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), was appointed as the new Director of the UPOU Information and Communication Technology Development Office (ICTDO) effective 3 January 2019 until 31 July 2019. She succeeded Asst. Prof. Al Francis Librero who led the office for more than 11 years and who is currently on study leave for his PhD degree.

Director Borromeo obtained her Master’s and PhD degrees in Engineering (Computing Science) from Keio University in Japan. Prior to studying in Japan, she graduated cum laude at the University of the Philippines Los Banos for her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Upon her return to UPOU in 2017, one of her first assignment under FICS was to take the lead in proposing the offering of a graduate degree in Data Science.

Dr. Borromeo has been teaching with UPOU since 2012 as an Assistant Professor for courses under the Diploma in Computer Science and Master of Information Systems programs. In 2013, she was appointed as the Secretary to the Faculty of FICS. She has conducted several studies that have been presented and published locally and internationally. In 2012, she won the Silver Medal for Young Innovator Award at the 26th Annual Conference of the Asian Association of Open Universities in Chiba, Japan for her paper entitled “Automatic Content Filtering and Publishing by Email for the UP Open University Doctor of Communication Program Learning Management System.”(ACLlamas)
