FICS research and administrative staff convene for the 2nd FICS MeetUps this 2021.

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) continues to serve its students and staff through knowledge sharing and inclusive learning. One of its initiatives is the FICS MeetUPs facilitated by the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS). On 20 April  2021, the second session of the FICS MeetUPs for this year was held online via Zoom.

Mr. Efraime Cruz, FICS project staff and the resource speaker for the 2nd quarterly MeetUPs, talked about the “Increasing Emotional Intelligence for More Meaningful Work and Quality Life.” This was sourced from the book, Emotional Intelligence 2.0, written by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves. He started by defining and describing emotional intelligence. He then shared some tips on how one can improve his/her emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence, according to the presentation, was defined as the ability to recognize and understand emotions in oneself and the ability to use this awareness to manage behaviour and relationships. To increase emotional intelligence, one must improve on two things: 1) his/her personal competencies such as self-awareness and self-management; and 2) his/her social competencies such as social awareness and relationship management.

Mr. Efraime Cruz, FICS project staff and the resource speaker for the 2nd quarterly MeetUPs, talked about the “Increasing Emotional Intelligence for More Meaningful Work and Quality Life.”

The presentation received a positive response from the audience due to its relevance in their line of work especially to those who provide student support services. Learning these tips gave them ideas on dealing with future challenges not just in work, but even in their individual lives.

Initially, the quarterly MeetUps aimed to empower and share knowledge and skills within the FICS research and administrative staff. But due to its continuous success, the organizers plan to extend this activity to the other faculty offices in UPOU so that they can also get helpful insights for work productivity and network building.
