UPOU x DSWD MOU

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) engaged in the forging of alliances with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through the inking of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) held last 19 June 2023. The agreement aims to upskill professionals and other stakeholders through the offering of applicable courses. This would also enable UPOU in helping DSWD in developing courses and streamlining its course delivery to the involved learners.

The signing proper was attended by UPOU representatives, namely: Chancellor Dr. Melinda dP. Bandalaria, Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) Dean Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Office of Gender Concerns (OGC) Director Dr. Finaflor F. Taylan, and PDA for Institutional Linkages  Ms. Margaret Jarmin-Suarez. The activity was graced by DSWD Secretary Rexlon T. Gatchalian who delivered his heartfelt keynote address.

Moreover, the activity primarily celebrated the 2023 Social Workers Day,  aiming to tackle the rights, privileges, and other aspects related to the welfare of Filipino social workers. The rights of social workers in line with their compensation and benefits as mandated by the Republic Act No. 9433, otherwise known as the “Magna Carta for Public Social Workers (PSWs)” was discussed by DSWD Assistant Secretary Janet P. Armas. Meanwhile, DSWD Undersecretary Vilma B. Cabrera, who also acts as the Co-Chair of the TWG on Magna Carta for Public Social Workers, delved into the topic of enhancing and promoting the well-being of Filipino social workers.

The foregoing activities opened a new chapter in boosting the expertise of social workers through professional development as well as cementing their importance in honing Philippine society.
