The Emerging Inter-disciplinary Research (EIDR) Related Learning Experience (RLE) team recently presented their research titled “Issues, Innovations, and Challenges: Simulation Technologies in Related Learning Experiences”at the 2023 International Conference on Open and Innovative Education (ICOIE), held at Hong Kong Metropolitan University from 04 to 06 July 2023. Assistant Professor Rita C. Ramos, Mr. Ronaldo de Jesus, Ms. Alaine Richelle Ramos and Mr. Bernard Paolo Secreto, members of the (Information Technology) IT team, were present at the conference.

The second session of parallel paper presentations focused primarily on educational technology. Six presentations highlighting various innovations for learning were presented during the session. Assistant Professor Ria Valerie D. Cabanes presented the EIDR RLE team’s study online via Zoom.

The team’s presentation included the findings of its systematic review of 95 articles published between 2020 and March 2023 in order to arrange and understand the issues, simulation technology innovations, and challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students’ lack of clinical experience, knowledge, and skills, ensuring that graduates can provide safe healthcare, reducing student anxiety and building their confidence, and adhering to health protocols were identified as problems. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Gamification are the most commonly used simulation technologies for addressing educational gaps caused by the pandemic. The obstacles encountered during the planning, development, implementation, and acceptance phases were further categorized into four groups: limited participation and access, limited knowledge and experience, high costs, and technological barriers. The paper has been selected as one of the finalists to compete for the Best Paper Award.

The team learned a great deal from the keynote presentations, including the four essential characteristics for future educational materials to be successful: 1) Integration; 2) Intelligence; 3) Interaction; and 4) Imagination, which are very useful for enhancing the current project and inspiring future ones.

The closing ceremony and announcement of paper award results was conducted on 06 July 2023.
