The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) congratulates its alumna and Senior Lecturer, Ms. Leona Paula L. Macalintal! Ms. Macalintal was bestowed the “Chief Nurse of the Year” Award at the 2023 Hospital Management Asia Awards in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

Ms. Macalintal graduated from UPOU in 2018 with a special citation for exemplary academic achievement in the Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) Program. She is the Assistant Vice President and Director of the Nursing Service Division of Cardinal Santos Medical Center and a Senior Lecturer for the UPOU MAN Program. She is a member of the Philippine Nurse’s Association, Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing (Alpha Alpha Fi Chapter), Critical Care Nurses Association of the Philippines, Philippine Nursing Research Society, Inc., and Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines. 

Ms. Macalintal is also the head of the healthcare Workforce Committee of the CSMC COVID Technical Advisory Group, a former team leader of the Training Committee for Accreditation Canada International, and a member of the Industry Advisory Board of Emilio Aguinaldo College since October 2018. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Paul University Quezon City as Magna Cum Laude, and was awarded Paulinian Nurse of the Year, Best Thesis, and Best in Psychiatric Nursing. Currently, she is completing her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing at the University of the Philippines Manila.

For her expertise and exemplary practice and service in healthcare, she was invited by the UPOU Faculty of Management and Development Studies as its Recognition Speaker in 2021.
