UPOU’s Paper on Blended, Online and Open Learning Published in Award-Winning Book

A team of faculty members from UP Open University (UPOU) has contributed to an award-winning book titled “Higher Education for Good: Teaching and Learning Futures,” published by Open Book Publishers. The team comprises Dr. Patricia B. Arinto, currently the Dean of UP Tacloban College and a Professor in the Faculty of Education; Dr. Primo Garcia, presently the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and a Professor in the Faculty of Management and Development Studies; and Assistant Professor Anna Katrina Marcial, the Chair of the Master of Distance Education Program in the Faculty of Education.

Their article titled “Cultivating sustainable blended and open learning ecosystems” is part of the 27 papers from authors all around the world who contributed to the publication edited by Laura Czerniewicz and Catherine Cronin. The book was published on 25 October 2023.

The article presents blended, online, and open learning (BOL) as the future of higher education. This chapter explores the concept of a BOL ecosystem in the Philippines, highlighting the Sustainable Institution Building for Open Learning (SIBOL) program, and emphasizing its relevance to global challenges in higher education. Dr. Arinto is the project leader of the SIBOL program.

The book provides different perspectives on how to build a better future for Higher Education despite turbulence and acute crises in recent years. This question has been addressed by multidisciplinary academics and professionals from across 17 countries providing rich and diverse insights based on their creative expressions from their perspectives and experiences. Each chapter in this book has been reviewed by esteemed scholars and professionals in higher education.

The book has been recently awarded the Best Edited Book Award for 2024 by Comparative and International Education Society’s Globalisation and Education SIG.  The book has over  4,826 downloads to date. Various organizers have expressed their interest in the book and have been promoting chapters of the book for a wider audience and information dissemination.
