UPOU Publishes New Free eBook: “University of the Future: Perspectives, Transformations and Sustainability”

Just the end of August 2024, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) through its Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA), released the newest of its publications. Titled “University of the Future: Perspectives, Transformations, and Sustainability,” this is an open-access educational resource that is available on UPOU Networks, UPOU’s repository of all educational multimedia resources.

The book is co-edited by Dr. Melinda F. Lumanta, Former UPOU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Dr. Primo G. Garcia, UPOU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs;  and Dr. Ricardo T. Bagarinao, Director of the UPOU Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning (CODTL). UP President Angelo A. Jimenez, as a foreword, stated that the “book is a valuable addition to the ongoing and larger discourse on the role of universities in the future.” He extended his congratulations to UPOU and expressed his hope that the publication would encourage more discussions about the “inclusive technology-supported and impactful academic offerings in the future.”

The book is a documentation of how UPOU spearheaded the ideation of the University of the Future (UoF). As the recognized “University of the Future” by the president of the country’s premier university, UPOU articulates in this book what UoF means and the strategies made towards attaining such status. The chapters in this book stem from various academic and informal conversations surrounding the disruptions in the education landscape brought about by the pandemic.

The book’s twelve chapters are divided into three parts: Perspectives, Conceptions and Disciplinary Dimensions of the UoF, Transformative Trends in the Future of University Learning, and Sustainability and Quality in the Future University Landscape. A total of twenty-two authors contributed to the chapters in this book, most of whom are faculty members, research personnel, and project staff of UPOU.
