Honoring Leaders in Women’s Advocacy: Dr. Carolyn Sobritchea and Dr. Melanie Reyes’ Milestones in Gender Advancement

The Quezon City Government recognized Dr. Carolyn Sobritchea, a Professorial Lecturer from the University of the Philippines Open University Faculty of Management and Development Studies (UPOU FMDS) under the Diploma in Women and Development (DWD) and Graduate Certificate in/Master of ASEAN Studies (GC/MAS) Programs, as the 2025 Gawad Tandang Sora Awardee. The awarding ceremony took place on 06 January 2025 during the tribute to Melchora Aquino, also known as “Tandang Sora”, in celebration of her 213th birth anniversary.

The Gawad Tandang Sora Award which was established through the Quezon City Ordinance No. SP- 3070, S-2021, celebrates Filipina Citizens who exemplify the values and virtues of Tandang Sora. It recognizes outstanding contributions to social work, women empowerment and development, community and social development.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has appointed Dr. Melanie Reyes, a Senior Lecturer at UPOU FMDS’ DWD Program, as a member of the Technical Panel for Gender and Women Studies effective 01 January 2025 until 31 December 2028.

Dr. Reyes is a recognized advocate for gender equity and women’s rights. As a member of the technical panel, she will be tasked with shaping the future of higher education in this vital field, advising CHED on curriculum development, academic standards, and policy recommendations. Dr. Reyes’ appointment is expected to contribute significantly to the enhancement of gender and women’s studies programs in Philippine higher education.
