On 20 August 2025, the University of the Philippines Open University-Faculty of Management and Development Studies (UPOU-FMDS) conducted its Faculty Orientation for First Semester and First Trimester Faculty-in-Charge (FICs) in a hybrid format at the Audiovisual Room, UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna, and via Zoom. A total of 39 FICs participated, with 11 attending onsite and 28 joining online.

The orientation sought to familiarize FICs with the support services available at FMDS, highlight the significance of Online Distance e-Learning (ODeL), underscore the role of quality assurance in academic programs, and provide guidance on administrative matters.

The program opened with welcome remarks from Associate Professor Finaflor F. Taylan, Dean of FMDS. An audio-visual presentation followed, showcasing FMDS, its faculty, Research, Extension, and Professional Staff (REPS), and administrative personnel, along with the range of services offered by the Faculty. Interactive introductions from new FICs further fostered a sense of community and collaboration among participants.

Assistant Professor Lorena Jean D. Saludadez, Chair of the ASEAN Studies Graduate Program, discussed the importance of ODeL and the pivotal role of FICs in developing effective course sites. Complementing this, Assistant Professor Tricia C. Ascan, Chair of the Associate of Arts in Digital Entrepreneurship and FMDS Quality Assurance Officer, emphasized how strict adherence to quality assurance standards strengthens academic programs and enhances graduates’ competitiveness in the workforce.

Administrative guidance was provided by Ms. Wyomia Pradas, FMDS Administrative Officer, who outlined procedures for the processing of FIC honoraria and explained the relevance of credit loading in the computation of compensation.

An open forum, moderated by Assistant Professor Edmerson Calungsod with the support of Dean Taylan, Assistant Professor Saludadez, Assistant Professor Ascan and Ms. Pradas, provided a venue for FICs to share insights and recommendations on teaching practices. The orientation formally concluded with closing remarks delivered by Assistant Professor Lloyd Lyndel P. Simporios, Secretary to the Faculty of FMDS.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): Quality Education, FMDS remains committed to delivering inclusive, accessible, and equitable education. Through this orientation, the Faculty reaffirmed its support for FICs in ensuring academic excellence and advancing high-quality education for learners.
