The Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) conducted a hybrid post-event evaluation meeting on 06 January 2026 at the Teaching and Learning Hub (TLH) Building and via Zoom. The said meeting targets to review and assess the implementation of the De La Salle Santiago Zobel (DLSZ) Exposure Social Formation Program for Grade 11 STEM students, held at the UPOU FMDS Perma G.A.R.D.E.N. (Growing Appreciation towards Resilience, Development, Entrepreneurship, and Nutrition), UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.

The program ran on the following dates: 29-30 September, 02 and 07 October, 13-14 and 26-27 November 2025. It was designed to expose students to real-world applications of science and technology through the permaculture program of UPOU. A key objective of the initiative was to promote environmental awareness and sustainable community development, and deepen students’ socio-civic consciousness and compassion through meaningful engagement.

During the 8-day program, a total of 238 students were divided into 8 groups who actively participated in practical sessions on bokashi composting, hügelkultur, preparation of infused water, and the creation of natural pesticides. These activities allowed students to connect scientific principles with sustainable, nature-based farming practices, reinforcing the relevance of permaculture in addressing climate and environmental challenges. A tree planting activity and tour in the 54th Los Baños Flower and Garden Show was also conducted simultaneously. Following the bokashi composting preparation, participants donated 6 bokashi kits to the UPOU FMDS Perma G.A.R.D.E.N.

The post-evaluation meeting was attended by representatives from both partner institutions. From DLSZ, participants included Ms. Aira David and Mr. Kenneth Alonzo, Social Action Ministers for Senior High School, and Mr. Benjamin Sazon, Social Action Office Head, all from the Social Action Office of the Lasallian Formation and Mission Department of DLSZ School. Representing the UPOU were Associate Professor Finaflor F. Taylan (via Zoom), FMDS Dean; Dr. Jabez Joshua Flores, UPOU Senior Lecturer and permaculture consultant; Ms. Maryjane Reondanga and Mr. Noel Elegerio, FMDS Perma G.A.R.D.E.N. caretakers; Ms. Tiffany Leanne Catbagan and Ms. Raizza Anna Alforja, support staff; and Ms. Dona Lyn Piamonte, Program Development Associate (PDA) of the UPOU FMDS Continuing Education Program (CEP).

During the discussions, both UPOU and DLSZ expressed their satisfaction with the overall implementation and outcomes of the program. The meeting highlighted the positive impact of experiential learning on students and underscored the importance of integrating permaculture into STEM education. The second batch of the said program is expected to take place in the next academic calendar of DLSZ, around June 2026. Following the meeting, the DLSZ team had the opportunity to revisit the laboratory site and harvested the vegetables their students planted last year. They were assisted by Ms. Reondanga and Mr. Elegerio.

Both institutions reaffirmed their shared commitment to sustainability education and expressed their intention to strengthen and expand the partnership in future initiatives that promote permaculture, climate change awareness, and community-oriented learning.
