Further advancing its commitment to internationalization and cultural dialogue, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) participated in the Nihongo Fiesta 2026 held on 28 February 2026 at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall.

Assoc. Prof. Roberto Figueroa Jr., Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), served as guest speaker during the 53rd Nihongo Speech Contest, one of its most anticipated highlights.

In his address titled “糸 (Ito): The Invisible Thread That Weaves Hearts Across Borders,” Dean Figueroa the transformative power of foreign language learning as a bridge toward empathy, collaboration, and global understanding. He highlighted how intercultural communication resonates with UPOU’s mission as a learning-centered university committed to widening access to quality education and strengthening cross-border academic partnerships.

During the event, Dean Figueroa also formally announced the relaunch of UPOU’s Intercultural Communication in Japan Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), developed in partnership with Japan Foundation Manila.  The course introduces learners to Hiragana and foundational aspects of Japanese culture, offering both linguistic and cultural grounding.

Through an open and accessible digital platform, participants will learn to read and write Hiragana while exploring key cultural concepts such as politeness, group harmony (wa), and everyday life in contemporary Japan.

UPOU Chancellor, Dr. Joane Serrano, graced the event as an Honored Guest, along with members of the FICS staff. During the festival, Chancellor Serrano also welcomed Dr. Mitsunori Makino of Chuo University, Tokyo, Japan, who is currently undertaking an academic visit at FICS, UPOU — further strengthening ongoing academic linkages between the two institutions

Organized by The Japan Foundation, Manila, Nihongo Fiesta 2026 gathered students, educators, institutional partners, and members of the Japanese-Filipino community in a vibrant celebration of Japanese language and culture. The event featured the 53rd Nihongo Speech Contest, the 3rd Philippine Kobanashi Festival, Japanese-themed booth activities, and a range of cultural performances.

The Board of Judges included representatives from The Japan Foundation, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, the Association for Japanese-Language Teaching (AJALT), and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Philippines, Inc., reflecting strong multi-sectoral collaboration in advancingJapanese language education in the country.

Beyond the formal program, participants engaged in interactive cultural booths such as the Yukata Experience and Matcha Making Experience, reinforcing the festival’s emphasis on immersive and experiential learning.

UPOU’s participation in Nihongo Fiesta 2026 highlights the University’s sustained commitment to international partnerships and cultural dialogue. Through initiatives that bridge languages and communities, UPOU continues to promote inclusive, globally responsive education and meaningful academic collaboration.
