The University of the Philippines (UP) is in search for the Next Chancellor of the UP Open University (UPOU). In November 2018, UP President Danilo L. Concepcion released an administrative order to institute a search process for the next Chancellor of UPOU, and constitute the search committee.

The Incumbent Chancellor, Dr. Melinda dela Pena Bandalaria, ended her term on 28 February 2019.

The search process commenced with the nomination and constitution of the Search Committee. The Search Committee is then in charge of releasing the call for nominations for Chancellor. Nominations were accepted until 26 February 2019. On 01 March 2019, the Public Forum was held for the report of the Incumbent Chancellor. On 6 March 2019, the nominee presented the vision paper, and the sectoral consultations were held with the UP and UPOU communities on 7 and 8 March 2019 in Los Banos and Diliman, Quezon City, respectively. On 8 March 2019, the Search Committee conducted an interview with the nominee.

The qualifications of a nominee for the Chancellor are: must be committed to academic freedom and the values and ideals of UP, must be distinct in his/her field of expertise with a general view and appreciation of other disciplines. A nominee must be a Filipino citizen with a strong nationalist commitment, demonstrates observance of the principles of collegiality and the democratic process, have unquestionable moral integrity, has academic and administrative leadership skills and willing to serve as Chancellor on a full-time basis and for the full term of 3 years.

The Search Committee, chaired by Dr. Alexander G. Flor, Dean of the UPOU Faculty of Information and Communication Studies, leads in all the activities related to the Search for the Next UPOU Chancellor. He is joined by Dr. Joane Serrano, Asst. Prof. Charisse Reyes, Ms. Jennifer Belen, Ms. Amalia Gecalao-Perez and Mr. Keizer Philip Ancajas and Atty. Roberto Lara, Secretary of the University, as the President’s Representative.

The next Chancellor of UPOU will be conferred by the UP Board of Regents on its BOR meeting on 28 March 2019. (ACLlamas)
