The UP Open University (UPOU) joins the worldwide celebration of Open Education Week on 5-9 March 2018. Sharing the same goal of raising awareness about free and open educational opportunities that exist for everyone, everywhere, UPOU participated in this week-long event through featuring its two public service programs–the UPOU Massive Open Distance e-Learning (MODeL) and the UPOU Commons.
The UPOU MODeL is the university's platform for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Courses offered are clustered under the following categories: ASEAN Studies; Child Rights Protection and Promotion; DE Readiness; eFilipiniana; eService Management Program; Interlocal Cooperation; ODEL Teacher Accreditation; Sustainable Development; and Technology for Teaching and Learning. On March 5 to 7 April 2018, UPOU is offering MOOCs on Strategic Planning in ODeL and Designing and Learning in ODeL. These free online courses can be accessed through http://model.upou.edu.ph.

UPOU Commons is a repository of UPOU-produced Open Educational Resources (OER). Through the UPOU Commons, the public can access learning resources that have been developed and produced by UPOU. These resources feature experts on content such as science, mathematics, technology, sociology, communication, arts, etc., who are not just from UPOU but from other UP units and academic institutions. OERs from UPOU Commons can be used by teachers and students to improve teaching and learning and can be accessed through this link.

These UPOU public service initiatives were featured in the Open Education Week's official website, a platform for universities, colleges, schools and organizations from all over the world to showcase what they're doing to make education more open, free, and available to everyone. Open Education Week was coordinated by the The Open Education Consortium, an association of hundreds of institutions and organizations around the globe that are committed to the ideals of open education.
