FMDS co-organizes Two GIS Training Courses with GeoInfometrics Solutions Co.

The Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) in partnership with GeoInfometrics Solutions Co. organized several two-day training courses which aimed to equip participants with basic knowledge on GIS and its application to Land Use Planning. This was held at the Training Room, Community Hub at the University of the Philippines Open University Main Headquarters.

The GIS Training course was held for two batches. The first batch of trainees, which was made up of staff from GeoInformetrics Solutions Co, Filsite Mapping Solutions, and UPOU, took the training course on 16-17 April 2018. Ms. Maripres Sarinas, Ms. Ophelia Cariño, and Ms. Grace Buno participated in the training as representatives of FMDS. They were joined by Ms. Rubie Parcon who represented the Faculty of Education (FEd). The second batch of trainees which was composed of representatives from LGU Planning Offices was trained on 19-20 April 2018.

During the two-day training course, participants from both batches had to complete 14 hands-on training exercises on the QGIS software, a free open source software used for mapping. The training covered topics such as Georeferencing, Geoprocessing, Digitizing raster layers, and Lay-outing maps, among others. The application of Google Earth and GPS apps on mobile devices were also included in the exercises. The participants were guided by Ms. Jane Girly C. Balanza, GIS Specialist and Consultant of Geoinfometrics Solutions Co., who served as the main speaker and facilitator for the two training activities. Mr. Joshua Lorenzo R. Layog, GIS Officer at Geoinfometrics Solutions Co, served as co-facilitator. Dr. Gerlie T. Tatlonghari, Executive Director of GeoInfometrics Solutions Co., was also present during the training sessions. (GABuno)
