The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) received the Scroll of Honor Award during the Philippine Red Cross’ (PRC) celebration of National Blood Donors’ Month held on 25 July 2019 at the Time Plaza, Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

The Scroll of Honor award was given in recognition and deepest appreciation of UPOU’s continuous participation in providing Red Cross services designed to improve the well-being of humanity. UPOU has been conducting blood donation drives since 2012 and has continued its partnership with PRC up to the present. UPOU has been awarded by PRC of a Certificate of Appreciation in 2017 and a Diploma of Service award in 2018.

During the program, Mr. Frank Gray M. Sorromero, Administrator of the PRC Laguna Chapter, presented the management report. He detailed the blood sources where schools, such as UPOU, are the second largest source of blood in Laguna. He mentioned that in 2018, the PRC was able to assist 2.7 million indigent patients. Likewise, he encouraged everyone to regularly conduct blood-letting activities as the need for blood continuously increases especially now that diseases like dengue continue to affect many people.

Dr. Edgardo Palacol, Chief of Laguna Medical Center, read the message of Hon. Ramil L. Hernandez, Laguna Governor. In his message, the governor articulated the important role of blood donation organizers, volunteers and donors. “Muli n’yong napatunayan na ang Laguna ay tunay na tahanan ng mga bayani, kayo ang aming mga bayani. Sa inyong kabutihang loob, maaari nating dugtungan ang buhay ng ating mga kababayang nangangailangan ng dugo.”

Ms. Emely M. Amoloza, University Extension Associate, and UPOU Blood Donation Proponent and Project Leader, received the award on behalf of UPOU. (Denielle M. Amoloza)
