Awarding of certificate to Felix Librero

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), in partnership with the UPOU Alumni Foundation, Inc. (UPOUAFI), held the 3rd FICS Masterclass: A Lecture Series from Thought Leaders on 30 May 2018 at The Sandbox, CCDL, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.

Dr. Felix Librero, Professor Emeritus and former UPOU Chancellor, served as the thought leader and discussed Thesis Writing: A Practical Guide.

Dr. Librero explained that a thesis or a dissertation is a capstone for academic degrees both for Masters and Doctoral degrees. Its purpose is to demonstrate a student’s expertise in his/her discipline, hence it is submitted in support of candidature for MS or PhD. “Your thesis will be your first professional academic work“.

Dr. Librero also shared some random thoughts on graduate education and research and their functions from the point of view of students, universities, profession, and knowledge generators and users. He stated that the practical function of these two concerns is to further intellectual development and knowledge generation. A suggested general manuscript outline was also discussed thoroughly during the lecture as well as the difference between a thesis outline and a thesis proposal, and research undertakings with mixed methodology.

Aside from UPOU students, alumni and staff members, this event was also attended by students from the University of the Philippines Los Baños(UPLB); La Consolacion College-Biñan; San Pedro College of Business Administration Graduate School of Business; UP College of Veterinary Medicine; UPLB-Institute of Plant Breeding; Psychology Association of the Philippines; and Laguna State Polytechnic University.

The Masterclass is a series of lectures wherein a thought leader discusses a topic from his/her field of expertise. This is done to start a discussion on the practical uses of the topics in the participants’ contexts. (LPPetrasanta)
