Dr. Diego Silang Maranan, Assistant Professor of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), shared his research works and practice in Cognitive Innovation as part of the course “Cognitive Science 1: Introduction to Cognitive Science” on 31 July 2018 at the University of California, Berkeley.

The lecture, titled “Collaboration and Cognitive Innovation: the Eureka Moment, Floating Brains, Reimagining the Body, and Acoustic Osteology,” was a collection of examples of the works and practice of approaching Cognitive Innovation from Dr. Maranan and three other CogNovo fellows.

Dr. Maranan presented two examples of his research works which emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in Cognitive Science Research. His first research, “Structural Illusion from Embodied Motion“, looked at technological metaphors using human movement. The second example he presented was his PhD research at CogNovo named “Haplós“–a wearable technology for body awareness. This design uses vibrotactile stimulation to create structured sensory experiences that would enhance the user’s perception of the body part that has been exposed to the device.

Dr. Diego Maranan is a transdisciplinary artist and researcher who co-creates socially-engaged art installations that build symbiotic relationships between plants, computers and people; and explores the connection between digital technologies and the perception of human movement.
