The Faculty of Information and Communication Studies – University of the Philippines Open University (FICS-UPOU), in collaboration with the UPOU Alumni Foundation, Inc. (UPOUAFI), held a Master Class on Appreciating the Numbers in Communication Research: Statistical Methods and Analysis, with Dr. Nancy E. Añez- Tandang as resource speaker.

Dr. Añez-Tandang is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Statistics (InStat), of the University of the Philippines Los Baños. She finished her Bachelor of Science in Statistics, cum laude, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics programs from UPLB.

In this masterclass Dr. Añez-Tandang shared the importance of appreciating the statistics in communication research. She further explained that the genuine understanding of the methods used can be realized by understanding the basic statistical concepts for proper data identification and appropriate methods. This will help lessen the errors when conducting research programs and studies. Asst. Professor Añez-Tandang also shared that there is a plethora of tools and softwares available online but one should know when to use such tools, and what tools should be used for each specific research.

The master class had 19 face-to-face participants and 25 online participants. They came from the Department of Education, Laguna; College of Development Communication, UPLB; College of Public Affairs and Development; Cebu Normal University; San Pedro College of Business and Administration; School of Environmental Science And Management; De La Salle University-Dasmariñas; Adventist University of the Philippines; Yonzon Associates, Inc.; Covenant of Grace School; Southern Philippines Agri-business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology; Polytechnic University of the Philippines; Philippine Normal University – Step Up Scholars; Lyceum of the Philippines University; Agricultural Training Institute; and Pangasinan State University. Students, alumni, and staff member of UPOU also participated in the event.
