FICS MeetUps Tackles the Basics of Video Production with Multimedia Center Director Luisa A. Gelisan

The UP Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) conducted its FICS MeetUps for the third quarter of the year on 08 July 2021. Ms. Luisa A. Gelisan, University Researcher and Director of the UPOU Multimedia Center, served as the Resource Person and she shared her knowledge and experience about “Developing Audio-Visual Presentations with Focus on Video Production.”

The presentation focused more on video production rather than video editing, since proficiency in the latter would require a series of training sessions. Given the availability of video editing applications and softwares, and their accessibility to people, learning the basic principles of video production is also important to produce quality video presentations.

Ms. Luisa A. Gelisan, University Researcher and Director of the UPOU Multimedia Center, served as the Resource Person and she shared her knowledge and experience about “Developing Audio-Visual Presentations with Focus on Video Production.”

Director Gelisan started by discussing the types of video formats used by the Multimedia Center. She mentioned that videos should be brief to maintain the interest of their viewers and a combination of words, graphics and screen casting can be used to emphasize the message of the video. She also showed some sample works to allow the participants to understand the lesson more clearly.

Afterwards, she discussed the types of video production, and their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, she explained the process involved in producing videos which include the pre-production, production, and post-production phases. According to Director Gelisan “Since challenges are inevitable in production, it is essential to conduct quality assurance at every step of the process”.

Some of the best practices that she shared include (1) writing your goals and objectives; (2) knowing your audience; (3) creating a short and concise material; (4) checking your composition; and (5) using a multimedia approach. Director Gelisan also quoted five principles of cognitive overload from Mayer’s Principles of Multimedia Production, namely, (1) The Redundancy Principle, (2) The Signaling Principle, (3) The Principle of Temporal Contiguity, (4) The Principle of Spatial Contiguity, and (5) The Coherence Principle. To see more of their work, she recommended visiting the UPOU Networks website which contains instructional videos that they created during the quarantine period.

The FICS staff expressed their appreciation for the session. For some, it provided new information, for others, it was a refresher. They are also looking forward to the video editing training sessions that the Multimedia Center will hold in the future.

The FICS MeetUps is a quarterly meeting attended by the FICS research and administrative staff which aims to empower one another through knowledge sharing and skills development.
