The 13th SyenSaya: The Los Baños Science Festival organized by the Los Banos Science Community Foundation, Inc. (LBSCF) came to a close with the announcement of the winners for the Outstanding Research and Development Awards, and the Youth Science Awards. In addition, the winners for the Spoken Word Poetry Contest were revealed. The Spoken Word Poetry Contest winners was announced by guest speaker and Chair of the LBSC Spoken Word Poetry (SWP) Contest, Ms. Cecilia Cielo-Mallari.

The judge panel for the SWP contest consisted of Mr. Carlo Bonn Felix Hornilla, Writer and Spoken Word Artist; Ms. Sierra Mai Rodriguez-Morrillo, News Anchor/Producer, CNN Philippines; and Mr. Cris Q. De Leon, Office of the University President, Laguna State Polytechnic University. The contestants were judged by the message/content of the poem, delivery/performance, originality, most number of Likes on FB, and the overall impact.
Ms. Melinda O. Mondoñedo from the Bureau of Plant Industry – Los Baños National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-LBNCRDPSC) won third place with P3,000 and a certificate with her piece, Pagbangon.
Ms.Karla Marijoy M. Tan and Cherry Rose F. Piñon, Philippine Rice Research Institute, won second place with P5,000 and a certificate with their piece Siyensya at Teknolohiya sa Panahon ng Pandemya.

Mr. Bryan Edward Ramilo from the La Consolacion College, Tanauan, Batangas, won first place on the Spoken Word Poetry Contest.

The next part of the program was the announcement of the winners of the LBSCFI Outstanding R&D Awards and Youth Science awards Winners. Dr. Feliciano G. Calora, Jr, Chairperson of the Awards Committee and DOST-PCAARRD Deputy Executive Director for Research and Development, announced the winners and finalists.

The Outstanding R&D winner was received by a project from the University of the Philippines Los Baños titled “The Inoculation of Entomo pathogenic Fungi as Endophyte in Rice: A Viable Biological Control Against Brown Planthopper” by Gina D. Balleras as lead author, Virginia R. Ocampo, Pompe C. Sta. Cruz, Gerardo F. Estoy, Jr., and Barbara L. Caoili.

The Outstanding R&D winner was received by a project from the University of the Philippines Los Baños by Gina D. Balleras as lead author.
Coming in on first place for the Youth Science Awards category is the Production of Anti-Bioaerosol Respiratory Face Mask from Saba (Musa acuminata x balbisiana) Stem Fibers and Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) Egg Membrane, led by Dianne Marien K. Alano from the Trece Martires City Senior High School.

The next project and winner of the Youth Science Awards category was the In-vitro Anticoagulation Effect of Ethanolic Chili Pepper (Capsium frutescens L.) Fruits Extract on Blood Types O+ and A+ by Justine Kate P. Albero as lead author, Maxenne D. Ignacio, and Chinatu C. Okano from the Trece Martires City Senior High School.
The third and final winner of the Youth Science Awards was the Antigenotoxic Effects of Quercetin from Onion (Allium cepa Linn.) Scales in Allium cepa-based Test by Faye Allen S. Ilagan from the Trece Martires City Senior High School.
As the 13th SyenSaya comes to a close, the President of the LBSCF and the current Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, delivered the closing remarks.
As the final act for the 13th SyenSaya, the dance troupe from the Philippine High School for the Arts delivered an exemplary performance.
