The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Research Conversations featured UPOU Professor Emeritus and former Chancellor Felix Librero, as resource person on 16 January 2019, 9:00 AM – 12:00 NN at the Sandbox, CCDL, UPOU Headquarters, Los Banos, Laguna. He presented his report on “Preliminary Assessment of Doctoral Dissertations as Reflection of UPOU Institutional Vision” where he discussed its implications to the University’s operations.

Dr. Librero’s report included an evaluation of the dissertations undertaken by the doctoral students of UPOU deposited with the UPOU Library as of December 2017. The objective was to determine whether these outputs reflect the University’s institutional vision. He made use of meta-analysis through summary and synthesis of the dissertations and found that there are issues that need to be addressed: review of related literature length is arbitrarily assigned; categorization of topics is loosely defined; and titles are mostly cluttered.

Based on this preliminary study, he observed the need to clarify and possibly rethink the concept of mixed research methodology, practice of limiting sample sizes, process of vetting proposals, and issues of contributions to the body of knowledge. These were the conclusions he arrived at: there is a need to establish the general direction of graduate research undertaken by graduate students of UPOU; articulate the methods employed in the dissertations; suggest an overall direction of the research that might be undertaken by future graduate researchers of UPOU; and articulate research direction through specific policy options in the identification of research topics at UPOU. To address these issues that arose from the report, he recommended the development of a UPOU Research and Development Program of Action and a University-wide database system for raw data.
