UPOU Alumnus Joins the Future Earth Assembly

Dr. Glenn Fernandez, a Dean’s Lister graduate of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Diploma in Environment and Natural Resources Management (DENRM) program in 2009, has joined the Future Earth Assembly as one of the ten representatives of Early Career Researchers across the world. Future Earth is a global network of scientists, researchers, and innovators whose vision is a sustainable and equitable world for all. The Assembly provides a platform for broad consultation across different societal and academic sectors and enables the full community to participate in the development of Future Earth core agenda, strategies, activities, and structures.

His DENRM degree from UPOU motivated Glenn to pursue his Master’s in Environmental Management and PhD in Global Environmental Studies at Kyoto University in Japan with the help of a Monbukagakusho Scholarship. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction, a joint institute of Sichuan University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University based in Chengdu, China. He has ongoing research projects related to disaster waste management, nature-based solutions for tsunami mitigation, youth participation in disaster risk reduction, and science diplomacy. A lifelong learner, Glenn obtained his Master in Public Management from UPOU in 2020 and is currently enrolled in the Professional Teaching Certification (PTC) program. He is also a Licensed Environmental Planner.

Glenn joins three other Filipinos in the Future Earth Assembly: National Scientist Lourdes Cruz, and Dr. Rico Ancog, the Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM) of UP Los Baños, who are both representing Future Earth Philippines; and Academician Jurgenne Primavera, who is one of the representatives of Sustainability Researchers from Low and Middle Income Countries (LICMIC).
