UPOU Conducts Training on ODeL for Guimaras State University (1)

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) conducted a two-day face-to-face Training-Workshop on “ODeL: From Framework to Delivery” on 29-30 October 2024 at the Guimaras State University (GSU), Guimaras, Iloilo. Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, UPOU Chancellor, led the team of facilitators, with Dr. Myra C. Almodiel, Associate Professor and Director of the UPOU Office of Public Affairs and Asst. Prof. Margaret Jarmin-Suarez, Faculty Members and Program Development Associate for Institutional Linkages.

This 16-hour training aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the frameworks, approaches, and technologies supporting open and distance e-learning (ODeL). It also guided participants in developing a blended learning plan that effectively integrates Open Educational Resources (OERs) to achieve specific learning outcomes. The training was attended by GSU faculty and administrators.

The program included four learning sessions. Dr. Bandalaria led the first session, “ODeL: Theories and Frameworks,” followed by Dr. Almodiel’s session on “Technology for ODeL.” Asst. Prof. Suarez then delivered the third session, “Learner Support Services in ODeL.” These sessions took place on the first day. On the second day, the program included a recap, the fourth session titled “Blended Learning Using Open Educational Resources (OERs)” led by Dr. Bandalaria, and a workshop where participants developed their blended learning plans using OERs.

This training program is part of UPOU’s efforts to fulfill its mandate under RA 10650, or the Open Distance Learning Act, which calls for supporting national agencies, higher education institutions, and technical and vocational institutions in developing distance education programs. The initiative also contributes to UPOU’s public service and supports the UP Flagship Program #4 on ODeL and UP Flagship Program #6 on Active Collaboration and Partnerships.
