UP Open University (UPOU) faculty and staff participated in the 2018 International Conference on Open and Innovative Education (ICOIE 2018) held on 4-6 July 2018 at the Jockey Club Campus, The Open University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR.

The ICOIE 2018 was organized by the Open University of Hong Kong. The conference focused on the trends in openness and innovation in the education sector.

The delegates from UPOU presented papers about different dimensions of e-Learning as practiced in the university.

Multimedia Director Luisa Gelisan presented a paper titled “Exploring the Use of Multimedia As Assessment Tools in E-learning” in which she studied how multimedia applied in the assessment methods of faculty members in UPOU.

Information Center Director Joane Serrano presented her study “UPOU Commons: Experiences in Developing and Sustaining an OER Repository,” which explored how UPOU Commons developed according to the challenges and goals perceived by its developers.

University Researcher Margaret Jarmin Suarez studied the role of emotional intelligence in the academic performance of UPOU students and presented “Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Academic Performance of UPOU Undergraduate Online Learners.”

University Extension Associate Emely Amoloza discussed about the storytelling methodology in the instructional design of lessons on coffee farming for agricultural students. Her paper is titled, “Digital Coffee Telling: Designing a Coffee e-Learning Narrative to Promote Coffee Growing in the Philippines,” which highlights how students’ leisure viewing habits may be used to guide course design for agriculture students.

Dr. Melinda dela Pena Bandalaria, UPOU Chancellor and President of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) also attended the conference together with Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso, former UPOU Chancellor and Secretary General of AAOU and Ms. Maria Dominique Culing, UPOU Research Staff for AAOU.
