Assoc. Prof. Roberto Figueroa, Jr. and Asst. Prof. Emely Amoloza of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) participated in the 22nd International Conference for Media in Education (ICoME 2024) from 21-23 August 2024 held at the Meiji University, Nakano Campus in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Figueroa served as a panelist during the discussion on Reconsidering Educational Media Studies from the perspective of the “Performance.” Along with him were Mr. Keiju Suzuki of Seto SOLAN Elementary School (Japan), Dr. Ken Hagiwara of Meiji University, and Dr. Jeeheon Ryu of Chonnam National University (South Korea). The panel discussion explored inquiry-based learning as a case study, focusing on the design of learning environments for inquiry-based learning, the role of teachers, the process of social identity construction among students, and the influence and role of educational media from a performance perspective.

On the other hand, Dr. Amoloza presented the paper titled, “Loss and Damage: Creative Approaches to Educating Climate Change Impacts in the Philippines” along with Dr. Crina Tañongon of UP Cebu. Their research explored the transformative potential of arts, media, and culture in documenting overlooked intangible losses such as cultural heritage, sense of place, and displacement. The study featured Asst. Prof. Jay Nathan Jore’s “Duyan ng Kadagatan” exhibit and Dr. Jabez Flores’ permaculture practice and use of mapping and drone technology. Their presentation showed how various experts from the University of the Philippines engaged with different stakeholders, combining artistic expression and scientific inquiry.

The International Conference for Media in Education (ICoME) is an international conference held in collaboration with JAEMS (Japan Association for Educational Media Study), KAEIM (Korean Association for Educational Information and Media), CAET (Chinese Association for Educational Technology), and TCC (Teaching, Colleges and Community) in the United States.
