Ms. Jilian Princess P. Bathan, FMDS alumna, presents their paper titled, “Advocating Forestry as a Topic in the High School Curriculum.”

The University of the Philippines Open University’s (UPOU) Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) congratulates Ms. Jilian Princess P. Bathan, an alumna of the Master of Environment and Natural Resources Management (MENRM) program, for successfully presenting the research paper titled, “Advocating Forestry as a Topic in the High School Curriculum.” It was awarded as one of the Best Posters at the 26th International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) World Congress with the theme “Forests and Society Towards 2050” held on 24-29 June 2024 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Ms. Bathan co-authored the award-winning paper with Dr. Leonida Bugayong, a senior lecturer in the MENRM program at FMDS. Their research, presented under Theme 5: Forests for the Future, aimed to establish a basis for high school education to include the topic of forests in the junior high school curriculum. It underscores the critical need to promote forest conservation and sustainable practices among the youth.

The 26th IUFRO World Congress convened over 4,300 scientists, leaders, and stakeholders from around the world facilitating discussions and collaborations on pressing scientific and technical issues related to forest research, policy, and management. These efforts aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 15: Life on Land.
