UPOU Conducts 2-Day Training Workshop on Open and Distance e-Learning in Biliran Province State University, Naval, Biliran

Last July 15-16, 2024, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) conducted a two-day “Training Workshop on Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) in Teaching and Learning” at Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) in Naval, Biliran. This event, organized by BiPSU, aimed to equip BiPSU faculty with the skills necessary to integrate open distance e-learning into the university’s curriculum starting AY 2024-2025.

In recognition of Republic Act No. 10650 known as the Open Distance Learning Act and as part of its mandate to make higher education accessible to a larger population through innovative and flexible ODeL modalities, UPOU supported this BiPSU initiative by providing resource speakers to develop the faculty’s knowledge and skills for effective ODeL delivery.  This event is also aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4: Quality Education and 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Assistant Professors Lorena Jean D. Saludadez and Rita C. Ramos from the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), along with Mr. Lexter J. Mangubat, Deputy Director of the Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning (CODTL), were invited as resource speakers to facilitate the workshop. Approximately 300 teaching personnel attended and participated in the event.

Mr. Mangubat opened the first day with a discussion on teaching approaches and pedagogies in an ODeL setting. This was followed by Asst. Prof. Ramos’s presentation on best practices in ODeL delivery. On the second day, Asst. Prof. Saludadez emphasized the importance of navigating and utilizing A.I. in assessment strategies. Each session was followed by a workshop activity to help BiPSU faculty members in revising their course syllabi and guides.

With UPOU’s assistance in diversifying their delivery modes, BiPSU aims to better meet the needs of its growing student population by enhancing their online education delivery.
