In celebration of National Mental Health Awareness Month in October, the UPOU Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) organized a workshop event entitled “Growing Together: Earth and Mind” held on 15 November 2024 at the UPOU Audiovisual Room. This was participated in by the UPOU Earth Ambassadors partner elementary schools namely Sto. Domingo Elementary School from Bay, Laguna, and The Learning Place from Los Baños, Laguna.

The event primarily aimed to foster connections between mental well-being and environmental stewardship. This also focused on encouraging the participants to recognize the interrelatedness between mental health and the environment. The event also highlighted how our relationship with the environment can deeply influence our mental state, and conversely, how a healthy mind can drive positive environmental action which align with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The event kicked off with a warm welcome message from the Dean of FMDS, Dr. Joane V. Serrano. She highlighted the growing need to address mental health issues and the untapped potential of environmental spaces to provide healing and solace. Her message set the tone for the event’s discussion, encouraging attendees to think about their own relationships with nature.

Ms. Erma Tidon, a Psychotherapist and Wellness Consultant, served as the resource person during the event. She emphasized the commonality between taking care of the earth and our minds, which both need attention, care, and balance. She also discussed the causes and impacts of mental health issues as well as the various healthy coping strategies.

The participants also had the opportunity to participate in a series of interactive workshops that explored practical ways to integrate environmental awareness with mental health practices.

As the event concluded, participants shared their thoughts and manifestations from the activities. Many spoke about how they felt relieved sharing their emotions through interactive activities. Ms. Erma ended the session by challenging the participants to share what they learned from the event. They were also encouraged to continue the work of connecting with nature, prioritizing mental health, and fostering a sense of community.

The closing words were shared by Mr. Larry N. Cruz, one of the esteemed members of the Public Service Committee, who thanked the Earth ambassadors and all the attendees for their collective energy and commitment to the event’s objectives. He also noted that the children are becoming more active. This growing engagement reflects a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between mental well-being and the environment.

As they become more aware, the next generation is taking crucial steps toward a future where both the environment and its people can thrive together.
