UPOU 25th Anniversary Poster

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary this 2020. A whole year of interesting and exciting activities awaits its constituents, partners and stakeholders.

Themed “Revolutionizing Disruptions for Excellence and Equity,” this celebration will focus on how UPOU’s pedagogy and technology disrupted and revolutionized education in the country and the region. The celebration will highlight the various disruptions in teaching and learning across various generations of distance education and how UPOU revolutionized disruptions for excellence and equity.

All stakeholders and partners who have been part of  UPOU for the last 25 years are invited to the following anniversary events: Off the Lip 2020 (Conference on Cognitive Innovation for Sustainable Development), Collaboratoire 2020, UPOU Anniversary Program, Research Conversation Series 2020, Kwentong UPOU (A Digital Video Festival and Competition), Sunduan and Grand Alumni Homecoming, ASEANnale 2020, and ICODeL 2020.

Off the Lip 2020 will be held on 24 to 25 January 2020 at the Centennial Center for Digital Learning (CCDL), UPOU, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The conference seeks to showcase radically multidisciplinary, multisectoral, and creative approaches to addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This event is jointly organized by UPOU, University of Plymouth, CogNovo Foundation, and partners from industry and civic society.

Collaboratoire 2020 is a week-long Research Residency program in multiple-disciplinary research and sustainability, especially in the context of the Philippines. The program will be held on 27 January to 2 February 2020 in Siargao, Philippines. Collaboratoire is also jointly organized by UPOU, University of Plymouth, CogNovo Foundation, and local and international partners from industry and civic society.

On 20 February 2020, the UPOU 25th Anniversary Program will be held at the UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.  This event gives special recognition to the pioneers of UPOU, especially people who have been essential in its establishment, and the first three years of its existence.

Also in February, Kwentong UPOU – A Digital Video Festival and Competition will be officially launched. One of the objectives of this activity is to gather documentations or narratives of experiences, learnings, and challenges in and about UPOU from different voices and viewed from different lenses—student/alumni; faculty and affiliate faculty members; and REPS and administrative staff members.

The Research Conversation Series 2020 focuses on “futures research” as a set of distinct research approaches to studying change resulting from disruptions in various fields of application. In line with the concept of the university of the future, the series will be in various formats including webinars and will be carried out in coordination with Faculty Offices.

In August, the Sunduan and Grand Alumni Homecoming will take place. New UPOU students for Academic Year 2020-2021 will be oriented and welcomed by the alumni.   All UPOU alumni will be invited to the first ever Grand Alumni Homecoming of the University.

Finally, in December 2020, back-to-back conferences will be organized by UPOU. First is ASEANnale which aims to share the ASEAN knowledge through films, multimedia and research. It is envisioned to be the space for sharing voices, collaboration and networking among ASEAN higher education students and faculty, and allow ASEAN academicians, experts, filmmakers and multimedia artists and scholars to engage in public discourse on ASEANology and promote the community of scholars on ASEAN. Secondly, the 4th International Conference on Open and Distance eLearning (ICODeL) will be held in Myanmar. ICODeL is a biennial international conference series on open and distance e-learning (ODeL) which aims to provide a forum for distance education and e-learning scholars, practitioners and policymakers to share and reflect on experiences, and collaboratively create and explore spaces and possibilities for ODeL for development.

UPOU calls on all its constituents, stakeholders and partners to join in the celebration. The time is ripe to renew ties with the university, reignite the fire of loyalty, and render continuing support for the sake of the university and the  nation.
