The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) continuously highlights the celebration of both National Women’s Month and International Women’s Day this March 2024. UPOU, through the Gender Focal Point System (GFPS) and the Office of Gender Concerns (OGC), will be celebrating Women’s Month with a series of events and activities. The month-long celebration aims to raise awareness about gender equality and women’s rights and corresponding issues and will serve as a tribute to the countless contributions and achievements of women in various fields and industries within the university’s open and distance e-learning (ODeL) framework.

This year’s theme, UPOU Working for Progress, Equality, and Inclusivity through Enhanced Community Engagement within Open and Distance e-learning, highlights the importance of investing in women’s empowerment, gender equality, and inclusivity.  It also hopes to expedite and sustain progress in different aspects of society. This theme also underscores UPOU’s commitment to empowering women through education and technology.

The celebration will kick off on 6 March 2024. OGC will prepare a booth at the lobby of the UPOU Main Building in Los Baños with various goodies and souvenirs for everyone. An opening program will then be held at the UPOU CCDL Auditorium with Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Development Studies, as resource speaker.

UPOU will conduct several public service, advocacy, and research activities coordinated by OGC and in collaboration with the Faculty of Studies and other units in the university. The following are the tentative activities slated for this celebration:

Through initiatives such as advocacy campaigns, research projects, seminars, workshops, and other innovative solutions, UPOU has been continuously achieving progress, equality, and inclusivity within gender in and outside of the university. By establishing numerous partnerships and connections with various organizations, communities, and the larger public, UPOU recognizes the vital role of community engagement. This involvement is crucial to ensuring that the university effectively reaches out to the public, making its initiatives grounded, relevant, accessible, and sustainable.

As Women’s Month approaches, it is time to take the opportunity to inspire change, promote inclusivity, and empower all individuals to strive for a more just and equitable society.

Tune in for more announcements and additional activities for Women’s Month 2024 that will be posted on OGC’s Facebook page- https://www.facebook.com/UPOU.OGC/

The country proclaimed the whole month of March as the National Women’s Month (Proclamation No. 224 s. 1988) while March 8 has been proclaimed as the National Women’s Day (Proclamation No. 224 s. 1988), both through former President Corazon Aquino in March 1988.
