#Y4IRT publishes 15 books

The project “Youth Capacity Building and Exchange Program toward Sustainable Development and Conservation of Ifugao Rice Terraces” or #Y4IRT of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) published 15 books on the Ifugao Rice Terraces (IRT) as a Satoyama landscape. All 15 books were published by the UPOU, funded by Mitsui & Co. Ltd. Environment Fund and the Satoyama Development Mechanism.

These books characterize the IRT’s ecological interactions, traditions and culture, and current conservation issues and approaches. They aim to empower youths with both knowledge and leadership capabilities to sustain the IRT landscape; and, to make the youth appreciate the importance of the IRT as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) and a Satoyama landscape as well as its relevance in our present world. The 15 books are outputs of the collaboration among the faculty members and experts from UPOU, UP Los Baños (UPLB), Ifugao State University (IFSU) and Kanazawa University.

Written by Dr. Inocencio E. Buot, Jr., Dr. Consuelo Dl. Habito, and Dr. Marissa P. Bulong, the first book, entitled “Conserving the Ifugao Rice Terraces as a Satoyama Landscape,” highlights the characteristics, issues, and conservation approaches of the IRT as a Satoyama landscape.

Ecosystems and human-nature interactions are discussed in the second book titled “Ecosystem Services of the Ifugao Rice Terraces Landscape,” written by Asst. Prof. Mark Anthony F. Rabena, Dr. Romeo A. Gomez, Jr., Dr. Elpidio Basilio, Jr., Ms. Melanie Subilla, and Dr. Thaddeus P. Lawas.

The third book, “Ifugao Rice Terraces and Sustainable Development,” focuses on the nature and relevance of sustainable development in the IRT written by Asst. Prof. Aurora V. Lacaste, Asst. Prof. Francis Mark Dioscoro R. Fellizar, and Asst. Prof. Eulalie D. Dulnuan.

Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Dr. Sherry B. Marasigan, and Dr. Martina B. Labhat elaborated on the relationship between nature, culture, and heritage in the fourth book “Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Ifugao Rice Terraces as a Satoyama Landscape.”

“Ifugao Rice Terraces as a Satoyama Landscape in the 21st Century,” the fifth book written by Dr. Buot and Asst. Prof. Rabena, features the digital landscape in the IRT and how it will sustain IRT conservation advocacies.

The other 10 books are contextualized and translated books of the same topics written in Ayangan and Tuwali. These are the titles under the Ayangan (A) and Tuwali (T) book series: (A) Hay Pangipananong Hi Ifugao Rice Terraces (IRT) An Satoyama, Ecosystem Services of the Ifugao Rice Terraces Landscape, Manánáy Án Ep-ephochán Nán Ágwáchán Chi Nun Kginitti Án Papadjáw Chi Immipugkgáw, Háy Pango’oy Uh, Háy Na-impfángunán Án A-at Uh Já Háy Photan Uh, and Hatu Kginitti Án Papadjáw Chi Immipugkgáw Un Ay Umat Hi Satoyama Landscape Ad Uwán Án  21st Century; (T) Pangipaphod Hi Nahamad Nan Nabanobanong An Payon Di Immipuggo (IRT) Umat Hinan Dayyukung/Nah-kung An Satoyama, Ecosystem Services of the Ifugao Rice Terraces Landscape, Mipadukke Di Kipkiphodan Nan Nabanobanong An Payon Di Immipuggo, Nan Eyyeh/Pangat, Nan Nitaguwah’ ya Nan Boltan uh, and Ifugao Rice Terraces An Mi-unnud Hi Satoyaman Dayyu’ung/Nah-kung Ituwen 21st Century.
