UPOU Student Showcases 3D Scanning Technology at CODTL Workshop

Demonstrating technological innovation, Mr. Joseph Isaiah Chan, a student at UPOU, captivated attendees with his presentation on 3D scanning technologies like Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and Gaussian splatting during a workshop hosted by the Center for Open and Distance Teaching and Learning (CODTL) on 4 June 2024.

Mr. Chan’s presentation showcased the transformative potential of 3D scanning technologies in various fields, including education and cultural preservation. His work highlighted how these technologies can create detailed, accurate digital representations of physical objects, providing valuable tools for immersive learning experiences. He also discussed the accessibility of these 3D scanning technologies from both the user’s and creator’s perspectives. He demonstrated their use and compared the differences in results, emphasizing how these advancements can enhance engagement, documentation, and preservation across multiple disciplines.

This presentation is part of a broader initiative by the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), in collaboration with IOP, to establish the ISTAR (Immersive Spatial Technology and Reality) Labs, a research group dedicated to exploring and advancing immersive technologies and spatial computing.

As UPOU continues to push the boundaries of educational technology, the contributions of students like Mr. Joseph Isaiah Chan are invaluable. Their innovative work not only enhances the university’s research capabilities but also provides a glimpse into the future of education through organized research groups and laboratories.
