The University of the Philippines Open University-Faculty of Management and Development Studies (UPOU-FMDS) and the University of the Philippines Los Banos-Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (UPLB-INREM) forged partnership to conduct a series of lectures titled Usapang Mapa at Kapaligiran: A Discussion Series on Urban Planning, Environmental Management, and Sustainability.

In support of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1: No Poverty, 2: Zero Hunger, 3: Good Health and Well-Being, 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, 13: Climate Action, and 15: Life on Land, the lecture series specifically aims to provide participants with an understanding of the Geographic Information System (GIS) principles and components and to showcase real-world applications of GIS highlighting its role in solving contemporary challenges. The GIS has become indispensable tools for urban planning, environmental management, and sustainability. It also allows analysis of spatial data through visual patterns that could aid informed decisions. As global problems are evolving into more complex scenarios and the world also becoming data-driven, understanding the fundamentals of GIS is crucial for harnessing spatial data for strategic decision-making and problem-solving.
