The University of the Philippines Board of Regents (BOR) has appointed Dr. Roberto Figueroa, Jr. as the new Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) at UP Open University (UPOU) during its 1397th meeting on 27 February 2025. His term will commence on 1 April 2025, succeeding Dr. Diego Maranan.

Dean Figueroa brings extensive experience in both academic and administrative leadership. He previously served as Program Director of the Immersive Open Pedagogies (IOP) research program and Deputy Director for Open and Digital Learning Research (ODLR) at the Center for Open and Distance Teaching and Learning (CODTL), UPOU. At FICS, he held key positions, including being the Program Chair for the Diploma in Computer Science (DCS) and Master of Information Science (MIS) programs at FICS.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, graduating cum laude, and his Master of Science in Computer Science from UP Los Baños. He later obtained his PhD in Educational Technology from the International Christian University (ICU) in Japan through the prestigious MEXT Scholarship funded by the Japanese government.

Dr. Figueroa has consistently demonstrated his ability to bridge academia and practice. His extensive work with international organizations highlights his global outlook and adaptability in diverse cultural and professional contexts. His track record of securing grants and awards, including an Association of Asian Open Universities (AAOU) Collaboration grant, Japan International Christian University (JICUF) activity grants, and a DOST PCIEERD-funded project for developing the capacity of an immersive learning lab for science communication, speaks to his dedication to excellence.

As he steps into the deanship, Dr. Figueroa envisions a future of innovation, collaboration, and well-being for FICS, guided by the three pillars of Confluence, Creativity, and Care.

The latter half of Day 2 of the 7th AAWS Congress offered an enriching and vibrant blend of academic exchanges among onsite and online participants.The fourth and final plenary session featured Dr. Carolyn I. Sobritchea, AAWS Council Member and Professorial Lecturer at the UP Open University. Dr. Sobritchea discussed integrating women’s empowerment, diversity, and sustainability in shaping Asia’s future, with particular attention to climate justice and women’s leadership. Her presentation highlighted Sustainable Development Goal 13 and emphasized that climate solutions must be equitable, prioritize vulnerable communities, and embed gender equality in climate mitigation efforts. The session was moderated by Asst. Prof. Maria Lourdes T. Jarabe, PhD, RSW (UPOU).The third panel session centered on NGA & Development Partners, moderated by Asst. Prof. Jephte Muñez (UPOU), followed by the final panel, “Empowering Learning, Sustaining Inclusion: Democratizing Gender Discourse through ODeL and ASEAN Collaboration,” moderated by Asst.
