The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) hosted the oath-taking and turnover of the newly elected officials of the UPOU University Student Council (USC) and the members of the editorial board of The Cursor held on 23 January 2026 at the UPOU Multimedia Center (MC) Theater in Diliman, Quezon City.
Organized in cooperation with of the UPOU Office of Student Affairs (OSA), the ceremony marked the official start of the officials’ term for Academic Year 2025-2026. The event underscored OSA’s role in fostering student leadership and campus engagement while respecting the independence of student-led governance and publications.
UPOU Chancellor Joane V. Serrano conveyed her message and encouraged the student leaders and journalists to stand firm in their principles, understand others, and stand up for the welfare of their fellow students. Asst. Prof. Roda L. Tajon, Director of OSA, and Mr. Rodolfo Pullian, OSA staff member, attended the event, highlighting the University’s continuing commitment to student development and welfare. Also present were Hon. Ron Dexter Clemente, UP Student Regent; Mariton Manalili, Chairperson of KASAMA sa UP; and Vyan Ethel Marie Abella, National Chairperson of the UP Solidaridad National Executive Council, who joined the student leaders in marking the transition of leadership.
During the oath-taking, the newly elected officers of the 4th USC and the members of the 3rd editorial board of The Cursor pledged to uphold responsible, transparent, and accountable leadership in service of the UPOU student body. The turnover segment formally signified the transfer of responsibilities from outgoing officers to the incoming leaders, ensuring continuity in student representation and campus journalism.
The activity reaffirmed the vital role of student organizations in shaping student participation and discourse in UPOU, with the Office of Student Affairs continuing to provide guidance and institutional support to student-led initiatives throughout the academic year.
