The UPOU Multimedia Center, through the OPEN Talk program, held talks/discussions aimed at providing information concerning 2022 Philippine Elections. These talks are part of the voters’ education initiatives of the university.

Open Talk 21: From Marites to Maricon: Kontra-Disimpormasyonsa Eleksyon

The first talk titled “From Marites to Maricon: Kontra-Disimpormasyon sa Eleksyon” was held on 18 March 2022. The speakers were Dr. Joane. V. Serrano, the Dean of UPOU Faculty of Management and Development Studies, Ms. Bash Yumol, a data scientist and member of the Computer Professionals Union, and Prof. Eileen G. Meneses, a faculty member at the Department of Humanities, University of the Philippines Los Baños. Mr. Ian Raphael Lopez, a writer for the UPLB Perspective moderated the talk. This event was conducted in cooperation with the UPLB and UPOU chapters of All UP Academic Employees Union, Akademya at Bayan Kontra-Disimpormasyon at Dayaan, and UPVote. The talk focused on disinformation, misinformation, fake news, the effects of social media algorithms, and how one can detect fake news.  

Open Talk 22: Ang Sikolohiyang Pilipino sa Halalan at Pamumuno

The second discussion titled “Ang Sikolohiyang Pilipino sa Halalan at Pamumuno” was held on 6 April 2022. The speakers were Prof. Jay A. Yacat, an associate professor, and Dr. Diwa Malaya A. Quiñones, an assistant professor, both from the Department of Psychology, University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). Dr. Danielle Ochoa, an assistant professor from UPD Department of Psychology moderated the discussion. This event was held in partnership with Pambansang Samahan sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino. The speakers discussed Filipino psychology in relation to election, choosing leaders, and leadership.

Open Talk Episode 23

The third and last discussion titled “Eleksyon 2022: Sure ka na ba?” was held on 4 May 2022. The speaker was Atty. Maria Ofelia “Ofie” Leaño, a Special Counsel at Disini Law, Policy Officer at the Digital Freedom Network, and Legal Policy Officer at the Technology, Law and Policy Program, College of Law University of the Philippines Diliman. Asst. Prof. Juvy Lizette M. Gervacio, the Program Chair of the Master of Public Management of Faculty of Management and Development Studie (FMDS) moderated the discussion. This event was co-organized with the Continuing Education Program, FMDS. The discussion delved into the importance and implications of voting and not voting and the roles and responsibilities of elected public officials.
