A lantern that blends tradition, sustainability, and technology

This coming Christmas season, we look back at UPOU student Sherry Mae Alcano’s “NINGNING” star lantern. Made entirely of recycled materials, her lantern honors the livelihood of Filipino communities and the traditional crafts of indigenous groups in the country.

While her full work was presented through an AR platform, we are highlighting today an animated video of the lanterns, which also depicts her silent protection against the proposed phaseout of jeepneys and its impact on the livelihood of Filipinos.

A digital lantern that shines with hope this Christmas season

As we welcome the Christmas season, we look back at the digital lantern created last year by UPOU students Myne Zamora and Rhod Ezekiel DS Vallo. Their work included a short film, an Instagram filter, and the parody itself. Today, we are highlighting just the video, which reveals the lantern at the end.

Inspired by stained glass windows, the lantern's vibrant colors and shifting patterns symbolize the resilience of Filipino communities.

Recognized by the Culture Kaleidoscope: Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Lanterns, organized by UPOU and the President’s Committee for Culture and the Arts (PCCA),

Their work was recognized at the “Culture Kaleidoscope: Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Lanterns", organized by UPOU and the President’s Committee for Culture and the Arts (PCCA).

UNESCO-ICHEI Visits UPOU to Explore Areas for Collaboration

UPOU welcomed the UNESCO-ICHEI’s delegation—Ms. BI Xiaohan, Deputy Director, and Mr. CAO Zian, Chief of the Global Partnership and Programme Office—for a benchmarking activity on 5 December 2025 at the UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna.

UNESCO-ICHEI’s delegation was joined by Dr. Joane Serrano, UPOU Chancellor; Dr. Aurora V. Lacaste, UPOU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Dr. Jean Saludadez, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration; Dr. Roberto Figueroa Jr., Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies; Dr. Reinald Adrian D. Pugoy, Director of ICT Development Office; Dr. Ria Mae H. Borromeo, Assistant to the Chancellor for Institutional Analytics and Insights; Asst. Prof. Blancaflor P. Arada, University Registrar; Dr. Juvy Lizette M. Gervacio, Director of Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning; and Asst. Prof. Remsce Pasahol, PDA for Institutional Linkages.

The two institutions discussed the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE), a global network under UNESCO-ICHEI that brings together higher education stakeholders worldwide, and explored ways to deepen collaboration by sharing and integrating courses across their platforms and reviewing programs for alignment. They also talked about strengthening future partnerships through events and other joint initiatives.

MOU Ceremonial Signing between UPOU, MECO, and UPAA

On 27 November 2025, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) held a ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA). The signing was held at the MECO Manila Office in Makati City.

The event was graced by the presence of delegates from UPOU: Dr. Roberto Figueroa, Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies; Dr. Charisse Reyes, Dean of the Faculty of Education; and Asst. Prof. Lorena Jean Saludadez, Assistant to the Chancellor for UP VINTA; from MECO: Chairperson & Resident Representative Corazon Avecilla-Padiernos and Board of Directors Member Jaybee C. Ruiz; and from UPAA: President Robert Lester F. Aranton, UP Alumnus Leopoldo Campos, and Executive Director Maria Recelyn A. Marasigan.

The collaboration covers developing capacity-building and upskilling opportunities for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in Taiwan, paving the way for future joint programs and projects.
