Three days of ideas, innovation, and immersive futures—WILLS 2026 concludes on a meaningful note

The World Immersive Learning Labs Symposium (WILLS) 2026 concluded on its third and final day, which remained filled with engaging discussions and presentations.

A keynote address was delivered by Professor Emeritus and University Scientist, UPOU Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), on the Economics of Open Immersive Pedagogies (IOP): Implications for Global South Academia. In his talk, Dr. Flor emphasized that educational institutions in the Global South should move away from commercial models and proprietary strategies in the design, development, and use of immersive technologies, and instead adopt more open and accessible approaches.

The final day also featured several research paper presentations covering topics such as immersive service-learning models, a 3D augmented reality interactive exhibition for cultural learning on Kotagede silver crafts, AI and 6G in the metaverse, advances in 3D face reconstruction from 2D images, an immersive virtual reality fashion boutique using FrameVR, and the development of inclusive immersive learning ecosystems integrating virtual tourism, intelligent NPCs, RAG agents, and digital signage.

Beyond-Borders Education for Filipino Nurses in Central Minnesota

The University of the Philippines Ventures for International and Transformative Academia (UP VINTA) and the UPOU Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) Program, in coordination with the Philippine Nurses Association – Central Minnesota (PNACM), held an online Information Session on 05 March.

The Information Session was marked by the enthusiastic participation of more than 30 attendees who joined via Zoom. Overseas Filipino participants expressed strong interest in the program as early as the overview and presentation of the MAN Program, raising questions about the admission process, mode of instruction, master’s thesis, clinical practicum, and even graduation.

The session was led by Assistant to the Chancellor for UP VINTA, Asst. Prof. Lorena Jean Saludadez; MAN Program Chair, Assoc. Prof. Rita Ramos; Asst. Prof. Regine Bagalanon; Assoc. Prof. Queenie Ridulme; PNACM President Dr. Patrick Soria and Vice President Dr. Edward Kabristante; and UP VINTA Project Staff Ms. Maryrose Alingasa.

UP VINTA, the UPOU MAN Program, and PNACM aspire to further support and serve Filipino nurses in Central Minnesota and beyond.

It's the 2nd day of WILLS 2026!

Today@UPOU: The World Immersive Learning Labs Symposium (WILLS) 2026 entered its second day with a series of plenary sessions and a keynote address held at the UP Open University Centennial Center for Digital Learning (CCDL) Auditorium.

A keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Mitsunori Makino, Chuo, University, Japan. In his talk, he discussed the goal of developing socially beneficial computer graphics (CG) technologies and emphasized a guiding philosophy: research should not remain confined within the laboratory but should be translated into solutions that address real-world challenges.

The day’s plenary sessions are themed “Cultural Representation and Human Connection in Immersive Worlds” and “Governance, Innovation, and Societal Impact.”

Stepping into the future of learning

INPHOTOS: The afternoon plenary sessions highlighted innovative and evolving practices in immersive learning. Presentations explored virtual campus environments that enable users to freely navigate digital spaces.

Speakers also addressed the challenge of educational access, and presented initiatives designed to allow learners to participate in specialized content from anywhere. Discussions emphasized the need for VR learning environments that are dynamic, responsive, and continuously evolving.

The afternoon concluded with the launch of the WILLS 2026 Exhibit at the World Class Multimedia Production Building, showcasing immersive learning technologies such as Virtual Reality, metaverse platforms, gesture-based interactive projection systems, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

World Immersive Learning Labs Symposium (WILLS) 2026

Today@UPOU: The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) welcomed participants to the World Immersive Learning Labs Symposium (WILLS) 2026 on 4 March 2026 at the Centennial Center for Digital Learning Auditorium.

In his opening message, UP President Angelo Jimenez highlighted how immersive technologies are transforming learning into more participatory and inclusive experiences, underscoring the need for thoughtful design, governance, and implementation. UPOU Chancellor Joane Serrano emphasized the importance of building an immersive yet sustainable future that widens access rather than deepens divides.

WILLS 2026 Chair Roberto Figueroa Jr. and Co-Chair Eric Hawkinson outlined the symposium’s focus on co-creation, cross-collaboration, and sustainable XR initiatives, while keynote speaker Lunchakorn Wuttisittikulkij spoke on the convergence of physical and digital learning spaces.
A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between UPOU, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Chuo University, and Chulalongkorn University, affirming a shared commitment to collaboration and innovation in immersive learning.

From service to scholarships

INPHOTOS: The UP Open University (UPOU) sealed the partnership with Air Materiel Wing Savings and Loan Association Inc. (AMWSLAI) through the signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on 2 March 2026 at the Office of the Chancellor, UPOU Headquarters in Los Banos, Laguna.

The partnership aims to implement the AMWSLAI Scholarship Program, enabling qualified AMWSLAI members and employees to pursue UPOU Master’s and Certificate programs, with AMWSLAI providing scholar endorsement and financial support and UPOU facilitating enrollment and academic services.

The signing ceremony was attended by Joane Serrano, Chancellor of UPOU, as one of the principal signatories, alongside University Registrar Blancaflor Arada, Office of Student Affairs Director Roda Tajon, and FMDS Asst. Prof. Edmerson Calungsod who also served as a principal signatory.

Representing AMWSLAI as principal signatories were COL. Angel Tapac (PAF) (Ret.), Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Mr. Ramon Manuel Nisperos, Chief Compliance Officer.

Today@UPOU: The Program Launching of the Continuing Education Program through Distance eLearning (CEPDeL – TDP9) was held on 2 March 2026 at the Audio-Visual room (AVR), UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna. Marking the 9th phase of a longstanding collaboration among the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), Department of Education – Schools Division of Quezon, the Local Government Unit of Mauban, Quezon Power Limited Co. (QPL), and the UPOU Foundation Inc. (UPOUFI), the program aims at continuously empowering educators, enriching classrooms, and strengthening communities.

The UPOU officials in attendance included UPOU Chancellor Joane Serrano, UPOU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Aurora Lacaste, UPOU Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Jean Saludadez, UPOU Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) Dean Roberto Figueroa Jr., and Assistant to the FICS Dean Myra Almodiel.

The Local Government Unit of Mauban Quezon was represented by Hon. Bautista Erwin Dwight C. Pastrana, Sangguniang Bayan on Education Chair Hon. Councillor Juan Lorenzo Pastrana, and LGU Mauban Municipal Administrator Mr. Robin Justine Cunanan.
