Student Learning Assistance System Online Applications for the First Trimester AY 2024-2025 (3rd Batch)

Undergraduate Programs/Students

The Student Learning Assistance System (SLAS) Online will be open for 3rd batch to accommodate UP students seeking additional financial aid (UP Grants-In-Aid Program) and other support programs (TES, donor-funded scholarships, and SAGA). The Office of Student Development Services will open the SLAS Online portal during the following dates:

The Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU)

The Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) launched the second pilot run of its QA-based Accreditation System for Technology-Enhanced and Technology-Mediated Higher Education at Universitas Terbuka (UT) in South Tangerang, Indonesia, from 1-3 October 2024. Spearheaded by UPOU Chancellor Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, the initiative aims to enhance quality assurance in higher education across Asia.

Chancellor Bandalaria was joined by Prof. Li Kam Cheong from Hong Kong Metropolitan University, serving as the International Expert; Prof. Drs. T. Basaruddin from Indonesia’s National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education, serving as the Local Expert; and Ms. Shaira Tanay, the Writer-Researcher for the AAOU Accreditation System, serving as the AAOU Accreditation Coordinator.

The call for nominations for the next Chancellor o

The call for nominations for the next Chancellor of the UP Open University (UPOU) has been released. Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, the incumbent Chancellor of UPOU, will be ending her third term on 28 February 2025.

The nomination is open to all faculty and staff members, students, and alumni of UPOU. As part of the search process, a presentation of the accomplishments, priorities, and challenges of the incumbent Chancellor will be held on 04 November 2024. The nominees will be presenting their visions, plans and programs on 18 November 2024, and consultations will be held among UPOU constituents on 18-19 November 2024. The nominees will also be interviewed by the Search Committee on 25 November 2024 before a report is submitted to the UP President by 10 January 2025.

Today@UPOU: The UP Open University (UPOU) welcomed visitors from the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) Office of the Assistant Vice President for Graduate Education on 10 October 2024 at the UPOU Headquarters in Los Banos, Laguna. Dr. Myra Almodiel, Director of the UPOU Office of Public Affairs (OPA), shared the UPOU’s practices and strategies in open and distance elearning with Dr. Andrei Coronel, Lead Coordinator for Open and Distance Education Learning, and Dr. Anne Lan Candelaria, Assistant Vice President for Graduate Education.

In accordance with RA 10650, the "Open Distance Learning Act," and its commitment to Sustainable Development Goals No. 4 (Quality Education) and No. 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), UPOU plays a crucial role in encouraging collaboration among various institutions and organizations. This initiative is focused on delivering accessible, high-quality education while fostering shared advancements in the education sector.

Today@UPOU: UP Open University (UPOU) welcomes the UP Assistant Vice President for Digital Transformation, Assoc. Prof. Peter. Sy and the Office of the Vice President for Development - Information Technology Development Center (OVPD-ITDC) Director Prof. Paulo Noel G. Paje, to the UPOU headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna today, 9 October 2024. The meeting is focused on exploring UPOU's digital transformation efforts and identifying opportunities for further enhancement and expansion.

All UPOU officials participated in the hybrid meeting, led by Chancellor Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, and UPOU Information and Communication Technology Development Office (ICTDO) Director, Dr. Reinald Adrian Pugoy. Each unit head presented the initiatives of their respective offices, as well as their plans related to Digital Transformation. AVP Sy shared his insights on how the some UPOU initiatives can be adopted as part of the OneUP implementation across all constituent units.

LOOK: The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), together with the Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)—Region III, solidified their collaborative ties through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on 7 October 2024 at Guagua District Jail, Pampanga. This partnership is the 2nd subprogram (contributing towards rehabilitating persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) through higher education) of the UPOU Faculty of Education’s PAGTULAY Program: Pagpapalawig ng mga oportunidad sa edukasyon para sa lahat ng Pilipino (Inclusive Educational Opportunities for the Filipino People).

This meaningful ceremony marks a significant milestone for UPOU in promoting educational inclusivity. The MOA signing with PSAU and BJMP Region III signifies UPOU's commitment to making quality education accessible to all, regardless of circumstances. By partnering with these institutions, UPOU can extend its reach and provide opportunities for marginalized sectors of society, such as PDLs.

bioSignals invites you to experience the intersection of art, science, and nature through a multimedia exhibit from 8-15 October 2024 at NO (@no.communityrunspace), Diliman, Quezon City.

Led by a distributed team of creative collaborators from the UPOU Faculty of Information and Communication Studies , TERRA BOMBA (Philippines), AwhiWorld/NZ (@awhiworld), the United Kingdom, and international artscience collective Space Ecologies Art and Design (@seads.network), the project gathers and shares biological signals from live plants, transmitting this data to global partners. The Philippine team’s focus on the culturally significant and resilient kangkong highlights themes of adaptability and connection in both natural and human systems.

Last 26 September 2024, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) and Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) celebrated a significant partnership by signing both a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at KMU, Taiwan, coinciding with the International University Social Responsibility Forum. These agreements aim to enhance academic collaboration and drive initiatives focused on university social responsibility.

Mike Clester Perez, a Product Quality Engineer bas

Mike Clester Perez, a Product Quality Engineer based in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, is an alumnus of the Diploma in Research and Development Management (DRDM) and Master of Research and Development Management (MRDM). He got his Master’s degree in 2023, as a lone and pioneer graduate of MRDM, and was awarded Dean’s Lister.

His new journey as a DSus student at the university is a testament to his belief that UPOU and this program are the ones that are suited for him as an overseas student. What pushed him to take DSus was his drive to continue the training he had in RDM. His advisers, mentors, and panel members also inspired him to do more and contribute to society and the world.

ICYMI: The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) conducted a benchmarking activity for Saint Louis University (SLU) on 20 September 2024 at the UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna.

Dr. Myra Almodiel, Director of UPOU Office of Public Affairs (OPA), received the visitors from SLU and led the discussions. The delegation from SLU, led by Dr. Faridah Kristi Wetherick, Dean of the School of Advanced Studies, included Graduate Program Coordinators Dr. Geraldine Wakat, Ms. Leilani De Guzman, Mr. Marcelino Lunag Jr., Mr. Mark Job Bascos, and Mr. Gulliver Eric Alawas. They explored UPOU’s strategies and practices in open and distance e-learning, focusing on areas such as faculty load, Continuing Education Programs (CEPs), the process of self-developing course materials, and UPOU’s Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as a public service initiative in compliance with RA 10650, the Open Distance Learning Act.

ICYMI: The University of the Philippines Open Univ

ICYMI: The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Library conducted an orientation for students about library resources titled “From Draft to Submission: Integrating Library Resource for Comprehensive Research and Writing Success” on 20 September 2024. This orientation was done online via Zoom. More than 480 students registered for the event and about 300 of these were able to participate.
